Who would you like to see win the show?
Oh, you’ll get an answer. But it’s always along the lines of “everyone’s so talented. Whoever wins will be deserving.”
Not Catie Turner and Jurnee.
Asked who they’d cast votes for to win Season 16 of American Idol, they both answered with the same name: Maddie Poppe.
“We’re endorsing her,” Catie told WTHN News 8.
“We love her. That’s our roommate,” Jurnee added.
That was just one of several questions the ladies answered in a series of interviews after being eliminated from Idol Sunday night.
Of course, these eliminations came with a caveat. Though Catie and Jurnee won’t be competing with the Top 5 Sunday night, they’ll be performing alongside them all summer as part of the American Idol Live summer tour.
Catie jokingly promised she won’t forget the lyrics every night, like she did when performing “Manic Monday” Sunday night. She also warned her fellow tour mates she’s a bit messy and never makes her bed.
Jurnee scoffed, saying she’s messier yet, with the habit of leaving half empty containers of soda or half-finished bags of snacks sitting about.
On a more serious note, both said they’re looking forward to recording music and releasing it to their suddenly larger fan bases.
In fact, Jurnee said she’d love to perform a new single on tour. Plus “Bright,” a song by Kehlani with “a great message” that she planned to do on Top 5 night had she advanced.
Catie said she’d love to perform some originals on tour — she got to sing a couple during the early rounds of the show. And perhaps an acoustic version of “Can’t Help Falling in Love.”
As for what they’re taking away from the show?
“I think I’m going to take away the fact that this is what I want to do with my life,” Catie told ABC7NY. “It’s more than a hobby.”
Added Jurnee: “I learned what real confidence is. When I came into the competition, I said I was confident, which was true. But I was only confident in myself until someone made me not confident in myself. I wasn’t really too confident at all.
“Now I feel like I’m confident enough to stand in a room and not compare myself to anybody. And to walk into any room and feel like I should be in that room. I’ve gained that confidence.”
Jurnee, whose wife is serving in the U.S. military, also had a special message for fans.
“Thank you for voting for someone so diverse and different and representing something that a lot of people are scared to talk about, which is the LGBTQ community,” she said in a live contestant Q&A. “Thank you for having open arms. And even if you weren’t a fan of it, or didn’t understand the LBGTQ community or our lifestyles before, thank you for being accepting and willing to start conversations to learn. That’s the whole reason I do this.”
