Season Seven, Season Seven Finals

After week 9: Ranking the remaining Idols

Finally, the voters got it right.

After two weeks of unjust verdicts, they sent the right singer home.

Finally, dreadlocks and a charming smile didn’t top talent.

And Mr. Jason Castro didn’t seem too disappointed to be leaving American Idol last night. I mean, what a contrast to last week’s tear-filled exit by Brooke White.

After botching two songs Tuesday, Jason admitted he didn’t know what he would have done next week, when he would have had to perform three.

Just what Idol fans want to hear from one of the top four competitors.

Jason’s swansong brings Idol fans within one week of knowing who will advance to the finals. Everyone’s expecting a David vs. David showdown. Only Syesha stands in the way.

Here’s how I rate them, purely on personal preference.

1. David Cook: This wasn’t his best week, but he just might become the first rocker to ever walk away with the Idol title. Bo Brice, who appeared on last night’s show, came the closest, losing to Carrie Underwood in the finals back in season four. David C.’s certainly been the most original of the Idols throughout the competition.

2. Syesha Mercado: Go ahead and boo, David A. fans, but Syesha has come on strong late in the competition. And what a survivor. The 21-year-old from Sarasota, Fla., lost her voice on Hollywood week, bounced back to make the final 24 and has dodged the elimination bullet no fewer than seven times since making the top 12.

3. David Archuleta: No doubt, the best vocalist of the final three when he picks the right song. But dead last among the final three in stage presence. Heck, he admitted Tuesday that the faces of the judges “scare him.” That said, he’ll probably be the next American Idol.
