Simon might have prayed for his elimination.
Millions of Idol fans might have marveled when he received a golden ticket to Hollywood, then groaned in disbelief when he became one of the 36 semifinalists.
But if you expect fellow contestants to speak ill of Nick Mitchell …
Well, it ain’t gonna happen.
Adam Lambert and Kris Allen, both bound for Idol’s finals, spoke with the media in a conference call Friday afternoon. Both answered questions about Nick.
Despite a knockout performance Wednesday night, Adam insists he was a little nervous when he found himself standing center stage with Nick at the end of the results show, knowing only one of them made it to the final 12.
“I did get a little nervous,” Adam said. “I thought Nick was brilliant the other night. So I really didn’t know which way it was going to go. I thought, ‘Here it goes. It’s a tossup.’”
Kris was asked if the other male contestants resented the TV time devoted to Nick, seeing as how he seldom sang a serious note on the show, seeing as how that was especially true Wednesday when he once again slipped into the character of Normund Gentle.
“He’s not mocking the show,” Kris said, pretty adamantly. “He’s doing what he knows how to do, and that’s entertain, and he’s really, really good at it.
“And no one feels anything (bad) toward him. We all love him to death.”
In interviews prior to the start of the semifinals, contestants were asked why they auditioned for the show.
Nick, a 27-year-old sketch comedian from Connecticut, provided a pretty simple answer.
“I decided to audition for American Idol, to be honest, just to hopefully get on camera and see if I could possibly get some work out of this or get an agent.”
Well, he got in front of a camera.
And his Idol antics may not have made all of us roar with laughter, but I have a feeling more work will come his way as well.
