This week brought new music from a former country artist on The Voice, though you might not recognize her by name.
Hailey Steele was a member of the country/folk duo The LiNE with Leland Grant when they landed a spot on Team Christina during Season 2 of The Voice.
That was back when The Voice was still finding its way and hadn’t quite figured out that the secret to superb performances wasn’t always forcing singers out of their comfort zones.
So in one of the show’s more bizarre battle rounds ever, Christina matched the country twosome against rapper Moses Stone and had them sing “Satisfaction” — yep, The Rolling Stones tune. Moses was declared the winner, though Adam and Blake (and yours truly) thought that was a mistake.
Anyway, that’s all in the past. The present is Hailey’s five-track, self-titled EP, which hit iTunes on Tuesday.
Hailey grew up in South Dakota, moved to Nashville when she was 19 and has been working as a songwriter/musician there ever since.
She helped finance the EP with a successful KickStarter campaign launched last January. At the time, she was 25.
Highlights on the EP include the ridiculously catchy pop-country “Getaway Car” (embedded above) and the darker, though no less catchy “High Horse” (love that ending).
Then there’s the tune called “Boyfriend,” which Hailey wrote with two other former Voice contestants, Nicolle Galyon and York-bound RaeLynn. You can check that out below.
Hailey has a number of shows coming up opening for singer-songwriter Stephen Kellogg, including a date next Friday (Nov. 28) at the The Ardmore Music Hall in the Philly suburbs. Tickets are $25 and you can learn more by going here.
The will be followed by a stop in the D.C. area the next night and two shows in North Carolina. You can check out the complete list on Hailey’s Facebook page and you can also keep up with her through her website. On Twitter, she is @hailey_steele and promotes her EP as “Whiskey Drinkin/ High Heel Slingin/ Lipgloss Cannonball” country.
