Live auditions get under way a week from today — July 11 to be precise — in Salt Lake City, Utah.

You say you’re not vacationing in Utah in the middle of summer.

Well, if you live in southcentral Pennsylvania, none of the audition cities are going to be all that convenient.

Idol will stop in Atlanta, Ga., on July 26 and Boston, Mass., on Aug. 2 (about a 7-hour trip by car from York), and that’s as close as it gets.

Other audition cities include San Francisco (July 16), Detroit (July 21), Austin, Texas (Aug. 7) and Omaha, Neb. (Aug 11).

And, no, the show hasn’t named new judges yet. Judges aren’t required for this part of the audition process — at least not the celebrity judges.

If it’s convenience you’re looking for, you might want to audition online. Those are already under way and will continue through Aug. 31.

Some of the rules …

  • You won’t be able to submit a pre-prepared video.
  • You will have to perform alone.
  • You will have to sing a cappella.
  • You can sing anything you like, including an original song.
  • If you’re invited to audition before the judges at some point, you’re going to have to cover your travel costs. Plus the travel costs for a guardian should you be under 18.
