Lancaster’s James Wolpert chose Halloween as the day to release his first single since appearing on The Voice.

Which is probably appropriate since the song is called “Bats.”

And since it’s release follows spooky reports on his website that James had suddenly gone missing.

But forget Halloween. This song is a raw rocker, guaranteed to grow on you with repeated listens.

Quite a contrast from the singer-songwriter vibe he showed off when he scored a Top 10 iTunes hit with his cover of Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You” on The Voice.

“Bats” is also the first song he’s released from his upcoming album, “The Entire City,” which is being funded with the help of a successful Kickstarter campaign James launched earlier this year.

Here’s what James told PennLive.com about “Bats:” “It’s a very self-deprecating song. It’s about personal missteps that I’ve made to push people in my life away. It’s just a little facet of the whole album, which is essentially a self portrait.”

No word yet on when we might get the album.

James was 22 when he auditioned for Season 5 of The Voice. He wound up making it all the way to the Top 5 on the show, being eliminated just before a finale that featured Tessanne Chin, Jacquie Lee and Will Champlin.

He scheduled a homecoming show at the American Music Theatre in February with Voice colleague Cole Vosbury that sold out so quickly, a second show was added.

Here’s “Bats.”
