Billboard debunks the Ron Paul factor

If you missed the story, Billboard pretty much debunked the idea that Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger” album got a sales boost from her endorsement of presidential candidate Ron Paul.

The stories started cropping up when “Stronger” surged from 39 to 17 on the Billboard 200 the week after Christmas.

In reality, sales of the album dropped that week, Billboard report.  Kelly’s rise on the charts was due to the fact that her post-Christmas sales didn’t drop as sharply as other artists’.

And any “bump” she got the week after Christmas was probably because iTunes was heavily promoting the release of a special iTunes session with Kelly, which came out Dec. 27, Billboard reports.

Regardless, the original Idol is doing just fine on the charts. “Stronger” was the highest charting album the week after Christmas, and the “Mr. Know It All” single just spent a fourth straight week at number one on the adult pop song chart.

Elsewhere:

* Thirteen weeks after its release, Scotty McCreery’s “Clear As Day” was finally bumped from the top two on the country albums chart. It dropped all the way to number three, behind Lady Antebellum’s “Own the Night” and Jason Aldean’s “My Kinda Party.”  “Clear As Day” is number 31 on the Billboard 200.

* Mandisa’s music rebounded on the Christian charts, probably partly due to the disappearance of holiday music. Her second single from her third album, “Waiting for Tomorrow,” jumped all the way from 21 to a new peak position at number six.  Her Grammy-nominated album “What If We Were Real” also jumped to number six, up from 19.
