Celia Babini and Karly Moreno admit they were a bit apprehensive when they found out what they’d be singing in the battle round.
You might say they worked it out.
Celia, 17, of New York, advanced for Team Adam Levine following their battle round performance of “Friends” by Marshmello and Anne-Marie.
But Karly moved on as well when she was stolen by Blake Shelton.
Celia said she was nervous about the song choice because she’s not a pop artist; Karly said she wasn’t familiar with the song.
Both said they wound up enjoying the performance and appreciating the way Adam pushed them our of their comfort zones. And agreed that teamwork was key to making “Friends” work.
“I think that we both went out there with the mindset of just having fun, doing our best, and supporting each other,” said Karly, 23, of Mission Viejo, Calif. “We put hard work into it as well and got to go out there with confidence in what we were doing. It was honestly so much fun and the best experience.”
Added Celia, 17, of New York, N.Y.: “The battle was a collaboration. From the get-go, Karly and I agreed that it was not about out doing one another, it was about being a team. We wanted a steal.
“It was funny because with that mentality we ended up developing a really great friendship, which of course only made us want each other to do well even more. We supported each other and had fun with one another. I think the coaches saw that.”
But that steal came awfully late. Karly had thanked Adam and was leaving the stage when Blake pushed his steal button.
“Blake waited so long to press his button, I came to terms in my head already that my voice journey was over,” Karly confessed. “Then, out of no where, he pressed his button and I was shocked. I couldn’t be more excited. AHHH TEAM BLAKE!!😍 Forever grateful! Can’t wait for what’s next.”
Both artists say they’d like to display their versatility in upcoming rounds on the show.
“I would really love to sing a slower, more heartfelt song to bring out that other side of me,” Karly told Voice Views. “And play my guitar. I really want to bring that emotion and connection. I’m a feeler.”
As for Celia …
“I love rock ‘n’ roll and there’s a lot of me that is influenced by that genre,” she said. “I would like to show that side of me, but also — and this one might be slightly surprising — I love country music.
“If I make it far enough, I really want to do some country songs. I’m super inspired by new wave country music and I know I’m from NYC, and I don’t have a ‘country’ voice, but I love singing it.”
We’ll see both young ladies again during the upcoming cross battles, which begin next week on The Voice.
