Appearing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno Friday night, Chris Medina said he had no idea Jennifer Lopez broke down in tears after telling him he didn’t make the semifinals of American Idol.
He found out when he watched the episode on TV and admitted “it kind of made me feel good.”
Not because Jennifer felt bad, but because it showed how touched she was by Chris, his devotion to fiancee Juliana Ramos and their story.
And Jennifer need not worry that she’d done a poor job of breaking the news to Chris.
“She told me really nice,” Chris said on the show. “I didn’t feel bad at all.”
Besides, he’d been sitting in a room with “40 people who were fantastic.” He admitted he “kind of had a feeling” he might be headed home rather than advancing to the Idol semifinals.
And Chris gets this distinction — the first contestant to release music as a result of the show.
His single, “What Are Words,” with lyrics clearly based on his relationship with Juliana, is available for download from iTunes. A music video version is also available.
As of Friday night, the single had 582 reviews. Clearly, Jennifer wasn’t the only one touched by their story.
Jay said part of the proceeds from the sale of the music will go to a fund for Juliana, who is still recovering from a traumatic brain injury suffered in the May 2, 2009, crash that delayed her marriage to Chris.
