American Idol fan favorite David Cook will release a new single Friday.

This is turning into a great year for fans who still follow their favorites from the FOX version of American Idol.

And Season 7 champ David Cook is about to add to the wave of new music by dropping his latest single, “Gimme Heartbreak,” on Friday.

What’s more, the song is the lead single from an upcoming EP that he plans to release in the fall as a followup to his 2015 album “Digital Vein.”

As for the single, David premiered it live at a concert held in conjunction with the Race of Hope in Washington, D.C., last month.

And Yahoo Music debuted the official track today.

David told Yahoo that his new music will have a “dark and edgy and moody sound.”

If you missed the live performance from last month at Jammin’ Java, I’ve embedded it before.

And, as I noted, David joins a long list of top finishers from American Idol to release music in 2017. We already have albums or EPs from Kris Allen, Mandisa, Danny Gokey, Colton Dixon, David Archuleta, Casey James, Crystal Bowersox, Halo Circus (Allison Iraheta), James Durbin, Jax and Jena Irene Asciutto.

And more is on the way. Haley Reinhart just announced plans for a new album and Kelly Clarkson will have one out later this year.
