Update: Well, American Idol’s Teen Choice winning streak came to an end.
Idol had been named Choice Reality TV Competition Show for the last seven years, but was facing new competition this year from The X Factor and The Voice.
And the honors went to the dreaded X Factor. Though I suppose The Voice is more dreaded in FOX circles.
Oh, well, there’s no accounting for taste.
In my mind, Idol’s still clearly the superior of the three shows. And The X Factor came off as an overblown, under-talented mess in its first season.
When vocally challenged Chris Rene makes your top three and a teen who likes to be known as Astro doesn’t get an early boot despite acting like the world’s biggest jerk … well, you’ve got problems.
Co-host and X Factor judge Demi Lovato earned two honors — Choice Twit (as in person to follow on Twitter) and Choice Female Music Star of Summer. Ryan Seacrest was also nominated in the former category; Jennifer Lopez in the latter.
Among other categories in which past Idol contestants were nominated.
Choice TV Male Reality Star: Scotty McCreery nominated; award went to Paul DelVecchio of Jersey Shore.
Choice TV Breakout Star (Female): Katharine McPhee nominated; award went to Hannah Simone of New Girl.
Choice Female Artist: Jennifer Lopez was nominated; the award went to Taylor Swift
Choice Break-up Song: “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson was nominated; award went to “Payphone” by Maroon 5 with Wiz Khalifa.
Choice Female Country Artist: Lauren Alaina, Carrie Underwood, Kellie Pickler were all nominated; award went to Taylor Swift
Choice TV Male Personality: Simon Cowell won in a cateogry in which Cee Lo Green and Steven Tyler were also nominated.
Choice TV Female Personality: Recently departed Idol judge Jennifer Lopez won, in a category that also include Christina Aguilera, Tyra Banks, Carrie Ann Inaba and Jessica Simpson.
Choice TV Breakout Show: The X Factor won again. Go figure. It was up against Smash, Revenge, New Girl and Don’t Trust the B- in Apt. 23.
Choice TV Female Reality Star: The Karadashians for Keeping Up with the Kardashians won; Lauren Alaina and Melanie Amaro were nominated
Choice Single by Female Artist: “Eyes Open” by Taylor Swift won. “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson and “Dance Again” by Jennifer Lopez were among the other nominees
Choice Fashion Icon (Female): Katy Perry won; Jennifer Lopez, Miley Cyrus, Zooey Deschanel and Nicki Minaj were the other nominees. Don’t feel bad for Miley. Somehow, she was named Choice Female Hottie. Again, go figure.
