Enid Ortiz is blunt about it. She did not expect to make the knockout round on The Voice.
Consider her Team Blake Shelton battle round challenge.
After turning one chair in the blinds, Enid was pitted against Valerie Ponzio, who had all four coaches spin around for her audition song.
And Enid and Valerie were asked to perform the country hit “Love Triangle” by former Voice standout RaeLynn.
Enid does not typically sing country music. In fact, she’s known as “Soul Shaker” in the Ragged Old Souls band she fronted pre-Voice.
But after a battle round match that was montaged on Monday’s episode, Blake declared Enid the winner.
Valerie wasn’t stolen, so she was eliminated from the competition.
Pre-Voice she was performing with her boyfriend in a country Americana duo they called Val and The Southern Line. They released an EP last year.
“So for me it was just really challenging to try to make the song into something that I would enjoy singing and something that would portray the kind of artist that I would like to be.”
“I don’t remember exactly what they (the coaches) said, but I know that everyone had something really positive to say about both Valerie and my performance. And I think, all in all, after watching the performance on YouTube, we gave one heck of a performance.”
While fans at home didn’t get to see the full performance, the show did post it to YouTube.
Enid clearly connected with the emotional message in a song RaeLynn wrote about growing up the child of divorced parents.
“I think that’s just the kind of person I am on a daily basis,” she said. “I’m just a big emotional ball. Everything that I do I do with the emotion just because I feel like that’s the way that people could read you the best and especially in music.
“That song meant so much to RaeLynn,” she added. “I saw the documentary on the song and how important it was. And I felt that after watching that, ‘I have to feel the way that she felt in order to perform the song at its best’ and portray her message.”
Enid now advances to the knockout round, which begins Monday night.
