Fifth Harmony shines, Katy Perry flops at 2017 VMAs

That gnashing of teeth following the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night was likely coming from ABC executives.

After all, Katy Perry was universally hailed as a flop during her awards show hosting gig.

And that’s not exactly the type of buzz you’re hoping for when you’re paying someone many millions (reportedly $25 million) to draw viewers to a reincarnation of American Idol that’s probably already coming a couple of years too soon.

Oh, well, at least the return of Idol is still several months away.

Meanwhile, isn’t it ironic that the hottest former singing show stars right now are the members of Fifth Harmony, four girls thrown together during the second season of the now defunct The X Factor when the show was desperately trying to make huge stars of Emblem3, the severely pitch-challenged boy band?

Fifth Harmony not only won the award for Best Pop Video for “Down,” their performance on the show was one of the most talked about after it began with an unrecognizable fifth member being yanked off the back of the stage.

Most viewers took that as a diss to Camila Cabello, who left the group in late 2016 to pursue a solo career.

Well, Ally Brooke, Normani Kordei, Dinah Jane and Lauren Jauregui showed on on Good Morning America to perform “He Like That” on Monday and were asked about that opening.

Ally said the ladies are asked all the time if they’re picking up a new fifth member.

“We wanted to show the world, in an artistic way, that, hey, the four of us are Fifth Harmony, and we’re stronger and better than we’ve ever been.”

Which could be taken as a diss to Camila, lol.
