Well, it looks like Phillip Phillips and American Idol scored a victory at the 2012 Olympics.
Ironically, with a big assist from NBC, home to Idol’s rival, “The Voice.”
NBC used “Home,” the song Phillip sang during the Idol finale and his first single, as the theme for the gold-medal winning U.S. gymnastics team.
Presto.
This morning, “Home” is the most downloaded song on iTunes, zipping in front of recent favorites like “Call My Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen and “Wide Awake” by Katy Perry.
In fact, it seems to be enjoying more success than when it was first released, in late May, after the Idol finale. Back then, it debuted at number 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100.
The other ironic thing about all this?
Though it’s one of the better Idol coronation songs in years, Phillip didn’t seem all that thrilled with it during his post-victory conference call with the press, saying he would have preferred to perform one of his own songs.
He called “Home” a “very good song,” but also insisted it wasn’t his first single and wasn’t the type of song he would write.
“It’s a little too pop for me,” he said at the time. “I don’t really put in any oh, oh, ohs, you know, oh-oh-oh … I’m a little more rock than that and so hopefully people will enjoy what I have to put out — some jazz rock stuff.”
You can check out “Home” in the featured video spot to your right.
And Phillip should thank his lucky stars he didn’t get stuck with a turkey like “No Boundaries” or “Change Nothing,” the song Jessica Sanchez wound up performing with the Idol title on the line.
