Yes, Elise Testone, I know you’ve released a brilliant blues album.
Yes, Megan Joy, I know you’ve released a sophomore album full of throwback pop songs better than anything you got to sing on American Idol.
And, yes, James Durbin, I know that’s a heck of a catchy lead single you’ve released from your upcoming second album.
I just wish American Idol would help spread the news.
The American Idol reboot for Season 13 has included some head-scratching changes.
I mean, truly mind-boggling decisions, like axing semifinalists before letting them sing a single note.
Another that baffles me: The decision to showcase upcoming artists like Jake Bugg, Kodaline and (coming next week) Mali Music during results show.
This is billed as an attempt to introduce new artists to viewers.
Hold it, isn’t Idol already doing that? With its own singers? You know, the ones who are performing each week?
Why do we need more introductions? Especially to artists who have nothing to do with the show?
I mean, I’m really confused. It’s almost as if Idol is saying, “Hey, if you don’t like our Season 13 cast, just take a listen to this.”
Here’s my idea.
Instead of more introductions, how about some re-introductions to the singers who helped draw viewers to the show week after week when they were competing.
Sorry, Keith Urban, but your choice for a new artist wasn’t very exciting. I’m sure I checked out through most of Jake Bugg’s performance.
Randy Jackson’s pick — Kodaline — was better, but I still found myself wondering why this band I’d barely heard of was there on the Idol stage.
I will guarantee you viewers would have enjoyed James Durbin’s “Parachute” more. And that he would have put on a better performance.
I will guarantee you Megan could have performed three or four songs off her new album that would have topped what Jake and Kodaline had to offer.
And I will guarantee you half the songs on Elise’s new album would have made a bigger impression. She could have gone soft with “I Will Not Break” or full-on blues with “In This Life,” and viewers would have been going “wow” when she finished singing.
So, Idol, if you’re really interested in introducing us to new music, I’d suggest listening to the music being released by your own past contestants.
And then help spread the word.
