Season Seven, Season Seven Semifinals

Idol says goodbye to talented twosome

Well, you can forget yesterday’s Idol blog about eight worthy female singers vying for six spots in the show’s final 12.

Two of those worthy young ladies — Alaina Whitaker and Alexandrea Lushington — got the boot last night.

Idol judges preach to contestants all the time about the importance of selecting a song that matches their talent. Failure to do so is the only excuse viewers have for jettisoning those two.

Simon Cowell called Alaina “a dark horse” in the competition Wednesday night. Twenty-four hours later, the tearful Carrie Underwood look-alike wasn’t even in the competition. Problem was, the vibrant young performer hopelessly dated herself with a bland rendition of “Hopelessly Devoted To You.”

And then, after having to be coaxed to sing a farewell song, after promising the audience that it would “sound terrible,” young Alaina belted out a more inspirational rendition the second time around, reinforcing my belief the viewers made the wrong decision by sending her packing.

As for Alexandrea, possibly the hippest of the final 10, her song choice (Chicago’s “If You Leave Me Now”) was even more bizarre, and earned her a spot in the “deserves to go home” category yesterday. But I was really hoping she’d get another chance.

On the boys’ side, Idol said goodbye to Jason Yeager and Robbie Carrico Thursday night. Neither was a threat to win the competition, but how Luke Menard and Danny Noriega survived to sing another week baffles me.

Carrico tried to make it as a rocker on Idol. The judges questioned his authenticity. Seems he used to be a member of a pop band called Boyz N Girlz United, which opened for Britney Spears in the late 1990s.

All of which sets the stage for what I hope is a pretty predictable week three of Idol. No way contrived rocker-nurse Amanda Overmyer, pouty Kady Malloy, the annoying Noriega or the persistently out-of-key Menard can survive another week.

Right?
