Actually, Ryan, it doesn’t qualify as a surprise if everyone knew it was going to happen since Monday.
I’m talking about Thursday’s results show on American Idol, of course.
In what was billed as a dramatic twist, Idol decided to send no one home Thursday night.
The show, faced with a numbers problem, had no choice.
There are only four singers left, but there were four elimination shows counting Thursday’s.
Unless Idol was going to stage a season finale with just one contestant, there had to be a week when everyone was safe.
Ryan, of course, placed the blame on the fact that the judges didn’t use their save, for the first time ever.
Truth is, the blame rests entirely with the Idol idiots who decided not to have any wild card contestants this year.
The judges’ save has always been optional. And Idol also had enough contestants to get through the season even if it wasn’t used.
If it was, the show simply eliminated two contestants the following week.
But let’s focus on the positive from Thursday’s show.
And there was one huge positive.
The voting public paid no mind to what the judges said Wednesday night. I’m not sure a judging panel has ever been more thoroughly ignored.
The way the judges praised Amber Holcomb, you would have thought she was Beyonce, Whitney Houston, Donna Summer and Rihanna all rolled into one.
The voting public recognized Amber for what she is: A pretender, not a contender, placing her in the bottom two. Yet again.
Meanwhile, the judges put the red X for elimination squarely on the back of Kree Harrison.
Guess what?
Idol voters rebelled, propelling Kree into the top two. Ahead of Amber. Ahead of Candice Glover.
The best news of all: If the save had been used, Thursday night’s voting results would have been discarded.
Since the votes carry over, Amber starts next week presumably way behind both Kree and Angie.
Probably behind Candice as well, if my guess is correct.
I still haven’t decided who I think belongs in the Idol finale. Based on what I’ve seen over the last month, I’m leaning toward Angie and Candice.
But I’m certain who belongs in the top three.
And that group does not include Amber Holcomb.
So let’s get ready to ignore the Idol judges for one more week.
Then we can celebrate a Top 3 that includes three truly deserving young ladies.

I don’t agree that the voters ignored the judges comments.
Kree was in the bottom two last week. Knowing she’s in danger of elimination, that means support for her would pick up this week.
Angie went first this week. The person who goes first is often in jeopardy of landing in the bottom two / going home.
The vote was just a continuation of these trends, nothing more.
Performance order at top 4 is not nearly as critical as earlier in the season. It’s true that contestants generally get a boost after being in the bottom 2/3 but Kree is different in that she had been in the top 2/3 every week that the top 2/3 had been relieved, which leads me to believe her bottom 2 showing was more of a fluke similar to Jessica Sanchez and Colton Dixon last season.
Sorry, that should say Amber went first this week (not Angie).
They just realized they needed to fill in an extra week. What about the girl who went home last week, why didn’t they give her an extra week. It was evident they did it to “save” Amber, who must have been at the bottom. Amber isn’t in the same category as the other three and should go home. The judges need to record the show and watch it again from home. She must sound a lot better in person than on stage. Darling girl, but really?? Judges need to wake up, they are making themselves look silly and manipulative.
