Back when she was 11 years old, Josie Jones won a singing competition in Alabama.

An interviewer asked her if she’d follow in Carrie Underwood’s footsteps and audition for American Idol.

Josie’s response: She really wanted to try The Voice.

She did in Season 17. For a second time.

And after her impressive cover of “Men and Mascara” by Julia Roberts, she wound up right where she wanted to be, as a member of Team Blake Shelton.

Here’s what Josie, 16, from Hamilton, Ala., had to say about her blind audition and her music.

In addition to performing solo, she’s part of a country girl group back home called Crossing Dixie.

Voice Views: How did you wind up auditioning for The Voice Season 17 and what prompted you to do it?

Josie: I auditioned 2 seasons before the 17th season and I did not make it on the show but I went pretty far so I decided I would give it another try.

Voice Views: Why did you choose “Men and Mascara”” for your audition song? Is that a song you’ve performed often? And is seemed like you were really stepping up your performance at the end to get Blake to turn. Was that the case?

Josie: I chose “Men and Mascara” as my song because I really love the song and I have sung it a few times and just really thought it showcased my voice well. I did step up my performance towards the end to try to get Blake to turn. He was the coach I was aiming for!

Voice Views: Why did you decide to join Team Blake?

Josie: I absolutely love Blake and always have. He’s country and I’m country and I just believe that he could help me more with what I want to do than any other coach.

Voice Views: Judging from YouTube, you’ve been involved in a number of competitions in the past. Do you think those helped prepare you for the blind audition?

Josie: I have been doing different singing competitions since I was very young. I had never done anything as big as The Voice but the small competitions I did definitely helped prepare me for the voice stage.

Voice Views: What had you been doing performance-wise before the show? Performing solo? Performing with Crossing Dixie? And what would you say was your biggest performance prior to The Voice?

Josie: Before the show, I had been playing shows with my Uncle Dave’s band and my band Crossing Dixie. My biggest performance before the show was for national competition at the FFA convention. It was at Colts field house in Indianapolis and was live streamed of RFDTV.

Voice Views: Do you have original music yet, either as a solo singer or with Crossing Dixie?

Josie: I do have original music as a solo artist. I will be releasing it soon!!
