Kris Allen (AP Photo)Kris Allen and Allison Iraheta were stars of season eight on American Idol.

They’ll be together again on New Year’s Eve, as star performers for “Billboard’s New Year’s Eve Live” (FOX, 11 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.), hosted by Carmen Electra.

They talked to the media about that performance and a wide range of topics in a conference call interview Wednesday afternoon.

Among those topics were the following …

New Year’s resolutions

Kris: “For me, man, it’s just work harder on music stuff, writing, performing and all that.”

Allison: “My resolution is not to have a New Year’s resolution.”

Are they surprised by the headlines Adam Lambert is making?

Allison IrahetaAllison: “No. I don’t think anyone should be surprised, really.”

Kris: “Anybody that knows him is not surprised at all. Obviously, it hasn’t hurt him.”

What songs do they prefer off one another’s album?

Allison: “Uh-oh. I personally love ‘Live Like We’re Dying,’ But I love ‘Red Guitar’ too.”

Kris: “What was the one you helped write, Allison? I really like that one. Anytime someone can be part of the writing, I like it.” (The song is “You Don’t Know Me.”)

How do they feel about Idol moving ahead without Paula Abdul?

Allison: “Obviously, we’re all going to miss her. I honestly have to say that I’m happy we got to work with her. But they’re getting Ellen. I really want to see what she has to bring to the table.”

Kris: “Paula’s the one was one we get to know the best. She’s a sweetheart. I think the show will definitely miss her. But I don’t know of one person who doesn’t like Ellen.”

How do they account for Idol’s popularity after all these years?

Kris: “I think the beauty of American Idol is that it takes people that they (viewers) can relate to, people that maybe acts like a friend of their’s or has the same job, or something like that and makes them into rock stars or country stars or pop stars or whatever. I think that’s the beauty of it: a person coming from nothing to a lot of fame.”

Allison: “It’s a reality show. And it’s definitely an interesting show.”

Check back. I’ll have more on the interview with the co-stars of the New Year’s Eve special closer to that date.
