Her background: It takes Alexa an hour and a half to get to school, “but it’s so totally worth it,” she told The Voice. That’s because she’s in the commercial arts program at the Orange County School of the Arts. Her classes include songwriting and recording. And every Friday, a band performs at lunchtime. “Growing up, I was kind of a sky kid. Arts school has helped me come out of my shell,” she says. She has a twin brother who admits he doesn’t sing nearly as well as Alexa.
What the show didn’t show:
* At age 12, she won the Upland Idol competition in her hometowm of Upland, Calif., becoming the youngest singer to accomplish that feat.
* Her website bio says that opened her eyes for “a love of music” as well as new opportunities, and she’s been performing ever since.
* She became a worship leader at age 15 at Hillside Community Church. On Facebook, she indicates that she became worship leader at Fishhook Fellowship Church in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., in late October.
* She hasn’t released original music, but you can check out one original (“Mind Reader”) on her YouTube channel and another (“Better Off Alone”) on her website. I’ve embedded “Mind Reader” below.
* There are still more samples of her talent on Vine, where her videos have recorded nearly 4 million loops.
* In a conference call with the media, Alexa said she learned her appreciation from classic rock from her dad. He used to sign and front a band, and she’d listen to them practice.
* As for her audition song, Alexa said she performed it at her school’s Generations of Pop concert and loves the message in the song.
* Her Voice bio indicates that Alexa had a younger brother who passed away from heart complications when he was just 32 hours old, and her family created a nonprofit organization — Steven’s Hope for Children — in his memory to provide essentials for families with seriously ill children. Alexa acts as the entertainment coordinator for the foundation and always incorporates music into the events.
On picking Team Kelly: Alexa explained on the show that she auditioned for a spot at her school with a Kelly Clarkson song, “People Like Us.” But during the conference call, she said that’s not the only reason she selected her as a coach. “She’s always been someone that I looked up to musically and as a person as well. I love that she’s never really been stuck in one particular genre. She’s very soulful, she’s done pop, she’s done classic rock. And I love the fact that she hasn’t been stuck and that’s what I want to do with my music.”
