Brittany Zika, Season 11

Meet American Idol contestant Brittany Zika

2

If you’re like me, you were awfully close to cursing Sara Bareilles during the Portland audition episode of American Idol.

I mean, Brittany Zika opened the show, and her segment had all the earmarks of an Idol tryout about to become a train wreck.

There was the dream sequence.  If you watched the show, you know what I’m talking about.

And, then, lo and behold, Brittany really did get to sing on stage with Sara Bareilles.

Oh, but it went farther than that.

“Sara told me, ‘You can sing. You’ve gotta do this. You’ve got to keep pursuing this,'”  Brittany says in her golden ticket interview, explaining why she auditioned for Idol.  “There’s no turning back from that.”

And then, there was Brittany, tripping her way onto the Idol stage, joking that her nickname is Tripster and Hipster, wearing large-frame glasses and a fedora.

Then a funny thing happened. Brittany launched into Brandi Carlisle’s “The Story.”  And by the second line it was clear she had a pretty special tone to her voice.

In fact, Jennifer Lopez called it “one of the prettiest voices we’ve heard.”  Randy agreed.

Presto, Tripster the Hipster was heading to Hollywood.

Of course, Steven didn’t perk up until Brittany whipped off the glasses, the fedora and sexed up her hair.  But that’s just Steven being Steven.

As for Brittany, she was 21 at the time of the Idol auditions.  Idol’s blue bar identified her as a nanny and social media tech.

On Facebook, you’ll learn that is studying professional writing at Portland State University, is married, can speak French and works at or has worked for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

And she is quite the character.  Just check out those faces in her Facebook profile photo.

If you needed further proof, the first song she sang for her family was Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” not exactly a song for a beginner.

All of which makes her explanation for why she should be the next American Idol perfectly logical.

“A good American Idol is someone who takes into consideration the whole entity of performance,” she says. “I think I would do a good job in trying to inspire audiences and relate to them and make them feel something through my music.”

Below, you’ll find another videos showing that, yes, Brittany can sing.  Plus that now famous performance with Sara.
