Season 11, Su Charles

Meet American Idol contestant Su Charles

3

Disaster turned into motivation for Su Charles, of Aurora, Colo.

She’s Haitian-American and she’s a nurse, so she headed to Haiti following the devastating earthquake in January 2010 that killed tens of thousands.

“Seeing the loss of life led me to realize I need to do what I was born to do, and that’s to sing,” she says in her golden ticket interview.  “I think I realized that life is short.”

So Su — who performs as SuCh — auditioned in Aspen, where she got three yes votes from the judges.

Su says she started singing at a very young age as part of a children’s choir in church.  Her Facebook makes reference to performing with a Grammy High School Choir and touring L.A. “alongside music’s luminaries,”  but also to a dream sacrificed in the name of getting a degree and landing a job.

“Ten years later, I’m turning a deaf ear and coming back FULL force to my first love. Stay with me!”

She lists her genre as soul and lists Aretha Franklin, Lauryn Hill, Ella Fitzgerald, Barbra Streisand and Adele among her influences.

She’s also married and has a son.

And, wow, what a voice.

What an amazing voice…looking into the eyes of such devastation as the hurricane in Haiti does make one evaluate what is really important in life.
