Her audition: Brooke Adee, 16, Tampa, Fla., sang “Skinny Love” by Birdy for her audition. A great opening prompted almost immediate chair turns from Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. She winds up turning in a very solid performance, but they’re the only chairs to turn. Blake said Brooke looks and sounds like “a future star.” She opted to join Team Blake.
Her background: She says her parents are not musical, but recalls her dad taking her to a performance of “Annie” when she was about 8 years old. “I thought it was so unreal. The singers were phenomenal. The acting was great. And I just wanted to do that since that day.” Brooke says she grew up in Georgia and recently moved to Florida after her mother was diagnosed with Lupus and was having trouble standing Georgia’s colder winters. She says there aren’t a lot of music programs at her high school, but she performs for tips at a Mexican and an Italian restaurant. “If I go at night and perform, I get really big tips,” she says, smiling. “I love tips.”
What the show didn’t show: Brooke was actually born in Austin, Texas, and moved to Georgia when she was 2. She’s the oldest of four children and writes on her website that she’s been “singing and acting in various school plays, theater companies and other venues since I can remember.” In her Voice video, she calls her music style indie-alternative. “I’ve always pulled more toward deep, emotional, kind of slow music,” she says. Among her influences: Lana Del Rey, The Fray and the English indie rock band alt-J. She says she’s hoping to improve her vocal training and her stage presence with the help of Blake, though she says she started to come out of her shell a little during the blind audition when she tried interacting with the crowd during the performance. She’s also hoping to be an inspiration to other young singers.
On picking Blake: “I love Adam. I love his music. I don’t really listen to country music. Blake seemed super cool. As soon as they started fighting, I thought ‘Blake’s my boy. He’s the one.’ There were just really good vibes.”
On iTunes: Just her audition song.
Update: In the battle round, she was matched against Bay Brooks. They sang Taylor Swift’s “Style.” Blake declared Brooke the winner; Bay was eliminated from the show. In the knockout round, she was pitted against fellow teen Kelsie May. Brooke performed “Electric Feel” and was declared the winner by Blake.
