American Idol returns to ABC on Sunday, Feb. 27. Here’s more about Christian.
* He arrives with singing show experience, having made the semifinals of America’s Got Talent in Season 12, which aired in 2017. From Long Island, N.Y., he was 16 when he auditioned.
* And that audition was memorable because he earned a golden buzzer form Howie Mandel for his cover of the Jackson 5’s “Who’s Loving You,” an honor that sent him straight to the show’s quarterfinals.
* Christian performed “Make It Rain” by Ed Sheeran and “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye in subsequent rounds, receiving a standing ovation from at least part of the judging panel each time.
* He’s released three singles since, “Missing Part of Me” in 2018, “Waiting” in 2019 and “Wishful Thinking” in 2020.
* “Waiting,” produced by country artist Hunter Hayes, has been the most successful to date, with more than 90,000 streams on Spotify. The accompanying music video, which you can check out below, has more than 37,000 views.
* Christian also has the type of backstory Idol loves. He was born with Leber congenital amaurosis, a degenerative diseases that affects the retina and left him legally blind when he was just six months old.
* What vision he did have began to decline at age 12. His mother found a support group on Facebook, and that eventually led to Christian undergoing a new type of gene therapy at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. As a result, he regained much of his vision.
* He’s shared his story with major media outlets several times since to raise awareness of the importance of medical research.
* As for music, Christian’s career didn’t begin on the America’s Got Talent stage. He showed a talent for singing at an early age and began competing at the Apollo Theater in New York. In 2014, he was the grand prize winner in the Apollo Stars of Tomorrow category.
