Her audition: Grey, 25, of Jacksonville, Fla., performed Kelly Clarkson’s “Catch My Breath.” Adam Levine turned around early in her performance. By the time it ended, Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green were facing the stage, too. Adam called her “extraordinary”; Christina said she got stronger over the course of the performance.
Background: Grey told The Voice she’s been singing since she could talk and grew up singing country music. She’s a May graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston and works with a wedding band. “That goes only so far as far as fulfilling yourself as a singer,” she said, “but you got to do what you got to do.” She also has a job in retail to help pay the bills.
On choosing Adam: “Picking Adam was kind of like a no-brainer for me. I’ve watched the show. I love his coaching style. He’s so realistic and he has such an open mind. He doesn’t make you something so specific. He wants to kind of grow with you and figure you out as an artist, too.”
What the show didn’t show: Her name is Greylyn Paluszynski, which pretty much explains why she’s adopted Grey as her stage name. “My last name is terrible,” she said the day after her audition aired. “It just doesn’t really roll off the tongue very well. I’ve always gone by Grey.” As for the wedding band, it’s called Elite Groove — or Groovin’ You — and was fronted by Grey and former Berklee student Nile Lombard. According to this website, the band performs hits from a number of genres — everything from hip-hop to rock, pop to jazz. And while Grey apparently hasn’t released any music, you can head to that site and hear her covering songs like “Domino” and “Respect.” Grey said she’s performed with the wedding band for about two years. As far as her career as a solo performer, she says she’s “fairly new to the game.” Though she has been known to burst into song in the stock room or sales floor of Anthropolgie, where she also worked back home.
Quote: Of singing in the wedding band, Grey says: “I love it, but that isn’t what I want to do for the rest of my life. You keep doing the same things over and over and that dream seems further and further away.”
On iTunes: The studio version of her audition song.

Dear Grey,
I love your full name. It’s beautiful. I’m glad I learned it. I was conscious of my last name growing up, but now I love it. What is your ethnic background?
