Her background: She got married a few days before The Voice, meaning she and her husband had to cancel their honeymoon so she could compete. Katrina says she’s done music her entire life. She remembers sitting under her grandmother’s piano and singing with her. She gigged a bit during college, but didn’t reveal her originals until after meeting her husband. She performs in a band called TomKat with him; they specialize in electro pop music. She also does radio jingles, many of them country since she lives in Texas.
On picking Team Blake: “I just kind of had a gut feeling. I knew that he had won a bunch of times, so of course that was in the back of my mind. But I really felt like he saw me as an artist and not just a contestant. So I was really interested in hearing what he had to say about the business and where he thinks my voice can go.”
What the show didn’t show:
* Katrina’s description for her music: “Sad songs from the world’s happiest girl.” She released a three-song EP earlier this year called “Rescue Me.”
* Katrina wrote the title track with husband Andrew McMillan and thanks him for rescuing her in an Instagram post. In other words, that isn’t one of those sad songs. Check it out below.
* Katrina and Andrew got married in late May. And they’ve yet to embark on that honeymoon, she said during a conference call on Oct. 16, the day after her blind audition aired.
* As indicated on the show, Katrina is also front woman for Tomkat, an indie, electro rock, synth pop band. Tomkat released a debut EP called “Big Love” in 2015 and followed it up with a full-length album, “Icarus,” last year.
* The band also includes bassist Mike Luzecky, drummer Jonny Harmon, Trenton Hull on synthesizer and hubby Andrew on guitar.
* Katrina, McMillan, Luzecky and Harmon met as students at the University of North Texas and formed Tomkat in 2015; Trenton Hull joined the band in time to contribute to the sound on “Icarus”
* Katrina grew up in the small town of Guilford, Conn., and also sings in a wedding band, according to her bio on The Voice website.
* Asked what she’s hoping to gain from The Voice, Katrina told Voice Views: “I’ve been with my band TomKat for so many years now, being a part of The Voice has reminded me that I’m a solo musician as well. I’m hoping it can help me find my voice, no pun intended, as a solo musician and kind of lead my solo music where it really needs to go.”
