Sophie Powers auditioned for American Idol Season 23

Season 23 officially kicked off Sunday with Carrie Underwood joining Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie at the judges’ table.

Auditions will continue this Sunday on ABC.

Here’s more about Sophie:

* She’s Sophie Lubrosky, a 20-year-old pop-punk artist from Toronto who’s already enjoyed more streaming success than most of the finalists in American Idol’s ABC era.

* Sophie has eight singles that have been streamed more than 1 million times on Spotify, led by “U Love It” and “Nosebleed,” with 6 and 5.3 million, respectively. Collectively, those songs have been streamed nearly 30 million times.

* Her latest single, “Goals,” dropped in January and has already topped 750,000 Spotify streams. She’s released a pair of EPs, “Red in Revenge” from 2022 and “Glitch: Lvl1” from last year.

* On her website, Sophie says her music has been described as hyper-punk, alt-pop and glitch-rock. Whatever the description, her mission is the same — to “reinject genuine emotion into” the pop landscape.

* Says Sophie: “My emotions were always invalidated as a young girl – you’re always being told, like, ‘You’re a teenager, you’ll get over it’. I don’t care if it’s extremely sad or extremely angry – I just want to make music that makes people feel validated and powerful.”

* Along the way, she’s developed quite the social media following — more than 300,000 followers on her Instagram, more than 400,000 followers and 17.3 million likes on her TikTok.

* Oh, she’s also a fashion designer of clothing based on video games and manga. You can check out her Gloomy Bear line here. She spent part of February visiting Japan and South Korea to promote the clothing collection.

* “Life is crazy,” Sophie writes in announcing those overseas stops. Yep, and it’s sure going to be interesting to see how the judges react to this talented young lady. I’d love to see her put a pop punk spin on a song on Disney Night.
