Poor puzzled Paula boots one of three singers on X Factor

So, The X Factor went into Thursday’s results show with three legitimate singers.

Now the show is down to two.

After the judges unwisely got rid of Drew.

The only good news to come from the results show was the exit of Astro, along with his tantrums and his ego.

Just in the nick of time.  Vote for the Worst had adopted him as its poster child.  Paula had predicted he had what it takes to win the show.

Have no fear, non-Astronauts.  Astro wound up as the low vote-getter Thursday.  I wonder if he’ll go back to being Brian Bradley now.

Probably not.  But here’s one person who won’t be following his post-X career.

The trouble started when Drew Ryniewicz wound up in the bottom three alongside Marcus Canty.

Not Chris Rene, mind you.  He must be getting by on that back-story.  Because he proves week after week that his singing ability is marginal.

Not Rachel Crow, mind you.  She must be getting by on the cuteness and pluck.  Because shouting does not equal singing, and she shouts more than she sings.

As soon as Drew wound up singing for survival against Marcus Canty, I suspected she might be in trouble.

Not because Marcus is better.  At this point, I’d nickname him mediocre Marcus.  I mean, that about sums up his weekly vocal performance.

But because just last night, Paula and Nicole had praised Marcus.

And just last night, Paula and Nicole had criticized Drew and mentor Simon Cowell for another subdued performance.

The criticism wasn’t entirely unfounded.  We’ve had six weeks of live shows and six songs from Drew without an up-tempo number among them.

I was hoping she’d go up-tempo for her save-me song.  Not such luck.  She delivered “Listen to Your Heart,” yet another ballad.

Still, Drew had been occasionally special during her X Factor performances.

Marcus?  Entertaining, perhaps, with some of those dance moves.  Vocally special?  Not yet.

Drew had never landed in the bottom two or three on the show.

Marcus?  He was in the bottom three for the second straight week.

All of which is why Paula should have sent the final decision to deadlock and let the voters decide the contestants’ fate Thursday night.

She didn’t.  She voted to eliminate Drew.

What could you expect from someone who thought the ego known as Astro could win the show?
