But looking back on his time on American Idol, Rayvon Owen said it also turned out to be “a blessing in disguise.”
“It gave me this extra push,” he said during a Thursday conference call with the media. “I feel like I gave my best performances under those circumstance. it pulled the fight out of me I did’t know I had.”
American Idol introduced a fan save via Twitter for the first time this season. Landing in the bottom two week-after-week, Rayvon earned all four instant saves that were available.
He earned a spot in Wednesday’s Top 4 show by getting more votes than Tyanna Jones on Top 5 Week.
But his string of near-eliminations ran out this week. He’ll be watching as Jax, Clark Beckham and Nick Fradiani take the stage next week.
But he’ll be watching with absolutely no regrets.
“I made it very far,” he said. “I feel very accomplished. Singing is what I’m built to do and what I will do the rest of my life.”
Like most Idol finalists, he hopes to make his own album once he leaves the show.
He said fans can expect “a pop recod with soul influence. It’s going to have the raw emotion of Sam Smith or John Legend, but with the pop edge of a Katy Perry.”
“And I’m a story-teller,” he added. “I want to make people cry, I want to make people laugh, I want to make people dance.”
Other tidbits from Thursday’s conference call:
* He thinks the format of Wednesday’s show, where the contestants knew they would get to sing and didn’t have to wait for their chair to turn green made “a huge difference” in the quality of the performances.
* He ranks “Believe,” the song he dedicated to his mom, as one of his favorite Idol performances. “You would not know who I am if it weren’t for her pushing me” and sacrificing to provide him opportunities to pursue singing when he was young, Rayvon said.
* Now that he’s had a chance to be on a TV show, he wouldn’t mind doing some acting as well. Aspirations also include creating his own line of hats, sorta like the ones he donned for every performance.
* One of his favorite Idol moments was getting to sit down with Harry Connick Jr. after last night’s show. “He gave me some great advice and tips on how to keep this train running … and he said he saw some of himself in me,” which Rayvon described as a huge compliment.

And don’t forget, Idol Season 14 concludes with a pair of shows next week — a one-hour Tuesday night performance show featuring the Top 2 at 9 p.m., and a two-hour finale at 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
