There might only be one country singer left on The Voice Season 21.
But at least four singers dipped into the country songbook — with mixed results — during Monday night’s Top 13 show.
They were vying for a chance to advance to next week’s Top 11.
Two singers will be eliminated Tuesday evening. The final spot in the Top 11 will be determined by an instant save among the lowest three vote-getters.
Here are song by song grades for Monday’s performances.
Paris Winningham (Team Blake) “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye: What do two straight superb performances get you? A chance to open the show on Top 13 night. I was missing the intensity and passion Paris has been delivering recently early in this performance. But once he tossed his hat into the audience he picked up on both counts. He’ll survive to sing another week. Grade: B
Jeremy Rosado (Team Kelly), “Because You Loved Me” by Celine Dion: Jeremy’s strength is power ballads, punctuated with glory notes that show off his range and tons of emotion. And that’s what he delivered again this week. It wasn’t a performance that will vault him into front-runner status. It should get him to the Top 11. Grade: B–
Ryleigh Plank (Team Ariana), “Rhiannon” by Fleetwood Mac: Ryleigh needed a comeback performance this week. The good news: This Stevie Nicks cover was better than her last two performances. The bad: It wasn’t good enough to convince me she’s going deep into this competition. Grade: C
Girl Named Tom (Team Kelly), “Dust in the Wind” by Kansas: 1. Bekah Liechty’s vocals are a treat to the ears. 2. This trio’s magic doesn’t end there. Check out those amazing harmonies on the second verse. 3. At midnight, this cover was sitting at number 30 on the Apple Music Top 200. It was the only Voice cover in the Top 200. Grade: A
Shadale (Team Legend), “Life is a Highway” by Rascal Flatts: The surprise song choice of the week. But look at it from Shadale’s perspective: She kicked ass on an R&B song last week and needed a save to advance. Why not shake things up with a country rocker and see what happens. It wasn’t as impressive. But it solidified my belief that Shadale would be a helluva lot of fun to watch in concert. Grade: C+
Hailey Mia (Team Kelly), “I’ll Stand by You” by The Pretenders: How about the train on that dress? Oops, I’m supposed to be judging the performance. Well, it was very good for a 14-year-old. But not as good as Hailey’s last three. And perhaps not as good as she needed after advancing last week only by the instant save. Grade: B–
Wendy Moten (Team Blake), “Blue Bayou” by Linda Ronstadt: And what the heck was up with that outfit? Oops, again. Anyway, “Blue Bayou” is a rather mellow tune, which made this a bit of a surprise pick for Wendy. And made it seem a bit forced when she went for all those big notes over the last minute. Sorry, the arrangement didn’t work for me. Grade: B
Jershika Maple (Team Legend), “God Only Knows” by for King & Country: Credit The Voice production team for creating the perfect staging for this performance. Jershika took us to church with her distinctive deep vocals and an emotional delivery. It added up to one of the best performance of the night and one that had better earn her a spot in the Top 11. Grade: A–
Jim & Sasha Allen (Team Ariana), “Your Song” by Elton John: I’ll keep this short. I felt bad putting Jim and Sasha at number 13 in my rankings this week. I felt less bad after this performance. Grade: C–
Lana Scott (Team Blake), “Humble and Kind” by Tim McGraw: A much better song choice for Lana this week. And a great showcase for those delicate classic country vocals. She needed a save to survive last week. I’m be shocked it she isn’t voted through this week. There are no team quotas this season, and here comes Team Blake. Grade: B+
Gymani (Team Kelly), “Made a Way” by Travis Greene: For the first minute or so, I was wondering how in the world this performance was going to stand out on a night of solid performances on The Voice. Then the background singers showed up. And Gymani started taking off vocally, leading up to a very nice ending. Grade: B
Joshua Vacanti (Team Legend), “You Will be Found” by Ben Platt: John correctly notes that Joshua has a lane all his own on The Voice. I’m just wondering how much fan support there’s going to be in that lane. Joshua consistently surprises me with his vocal firepower, but this vocal wasn’t quite as on point as last week’s. Grade: B–
Holly Forbes (Team Ariana), “The Dance” by Garth Brooks: Not sure how this wound up being the final performance of the night. I really liked Holly’s soft, sincere opening. I wasn’t a fan the rest of the performance. Like Wendy’s “Blue Bayou,” it seemed like Holly was trying to do more than necessary with a country song that relies more on emotion than big belting notes. Grade: B–
