Song by song playoff grades for Team Gwen

0

At least two singers from Team Gwen Stefani will advance on The Voice this week.

One will advance based on fan voting following Monday’s show. One will advance via Gwen’s save on Tuesday.

Here’s a look at his team’s performances from Monday night.

Ben Allen, “There Goes My Life” by Kenny Chesney — Nice, emotional song choice that should strike a chord with The Voice’s legion of country fans. Especially since Ben delivered it with such conviction and delivered the best vocal of the night for Team Gwen in the process. Grade: B+

Carter Rubin, “Hero” by Mariah Carey — Carter just had a birthday, meaning he’s now 15. But asking him to tackle a Mariah Carey standard might have been too much. Carter certainly flashed potential, but the opening was also a bit rough. Nerves perhaps? Not a “Hero” cover I care to hear again. Grade: B–

Joseph Soul, “How Deep Is Your Love” by The Bee Gees — I liked this performance more once Joseph left the mic stand and did a little ad libbing. But there were pitch problems all over the place, especially when he strained for the high notes. Grade: C–

Payge Turner, “It’s Gonna Be Me” by NSYNC — Nice, creative performance from Payge, who started the song on guitar, then wound up kneeling in center stage for a big ending. The vocal wasn’t perfect, but it was impressive enough to earn her a spot on next week’s show based on Monday’s performances. Grade: B

Who should advance? Ben and Payge. But, rest assured, Gwen will save Carter if he doesn’t get in on fan voting.
