The Voice confirmed the news via Twitter with a message that reads: “We are heartbroken by the passing of Nolan Neal. His incredible talent will always be remembered.
“Our sincerest sympathy goes out to his family and friends during this time.”
A cause of death has not been determined. Neal was found dead Monday in his Nashville apartment.
He initially auditioned for The Voice Season 10 and shared the story of his father’s suicide and his subsequent struggle with addiction.
He failed to turn a chair in that year’s blind audition, but returned the following season and enticed all four Voice coaches to turn their chairs with his performance of Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer.”
Neal advanced to the knockout round before being eliminated. He later told WBIR.com that he was still struggling with addiction while he was on the show.
That interview coincided with the airing of his audition for America’s Got Talent. He auditioned with an original song called “Lost” about his struggles.
He made it to the semifinals on Season 15 of that show.
Post-Voice, he released an album called NashLA in 2018. He released a trio of singles last year — “Planet Prison,” “Heart-Shaped Box” and “Love is Blind.”
