One more week, and Carrie Underwood’s “Play On” will have spent more time in the top 10 on the Billboard 200 than any other Idol release in 2009.
In fact, most of the good news for Idols on the Billboard music charts this week comes courtesy of Carrie.
“Play On” moved up a spot, from six to five, among the top 200 albums, and both of Carrie’s previous albums charted this week as well — “Carnival Ride” at number 182 and “Some Hearts” at 184.
The “Cowboy Casanova” single slipped two notches to number 30 among the Hot 100. But, have no fear, there’s another Carrie single moving up the charts. “Temporary Home” debuted at number 26 this week on the country singles chart.
The news wasn’t nearly so bright for most of the other Idols, including the big three from season eight. Here’s a complete rundown of Idols on the music charts.
Kris Allen: The single, “Live Like We’re Dying,” is showing some life on the Hot 100, moving up from 44 to 36 this week. Of the singles released by the trio of Kris, Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta, his is the only one in the Hot 100, hardly a good sign. But single success doesn’t always translate into album sales. Kris’ CD feel from 52 to 61 this week.
David Archuleta: “Christmas From the Heart” tumbled a bit a week before Christmas, sliding from 34 to 47 among the Billboard 200. It’s still number 10 among holiday albums.
Kelly Clarkson: After a very slow and steady climb all the way to number 13 in the Hot 100, “Already Gone” started heading in the opposite direction this week, slipping to number 15. It’s number seven on the pop songs chart; number 12 among songs in terms of radio play.
Meanwhile, Kelly’s “My Life Would Suck Without You” is now a hit for the cast of Glee, debuting at number 51 on the Hot 100.
Daughtry: OK, Chris and the guys might be the other bright spot on the charts this week. Their album, “Leave This Town,” was one of the week’s big gainers in terms of sales, moving up from 68 to 66 on the Billboard 200. And the second single off the album, “Life After You,” debuted at number 64 on the Hot 100.
Allison Iraheta: During a conference call interview Wednesday, Allison said she’d like to build up a little more name recognition. Might help. Her “Just Like You” debut slipped all the way from 35 to 99 on the Billboard 200 in its second week on the chart.
Adam Lambert: So far, Adam’s album has been the most successful of those released by the season eight contestants. And it’s falling fairly quickly. In three weeks, it’s gone from number three to number 22 to number 30. The “For Your Entertainment” single did worse.
Kellie Pickler: And Ms. Pickler makes for three bright spots on the charts this week. Her single, “Didn’t You Know How Much I Loved You,” jumping five spots on the county singles chart. Her second album has demonstrated some staying power on the charts as well, moving up from 32 to 29 on this week.
Jordin Sparks: The former number one dance club hit “S.O.S. (Let the Music Play) has settled in at number 15 on the charts. It’s been in that spot for the past two weeks.
