Collin McLoughlin, 24, of Bedford, N.Y., was the singer who upset his parents when he decided to drop out of grad school.
He was attending NYU’s music business master’s program with the intent of working for a record label.
Then he decided he’d rather be making music than working on the business side of the industry.
So he left school and moved back into his parents’ home, sleeping in his old childhood bedroom.
“It’s the last thing I wanted to do,” he told The Voice. “But I felt like I had to. It got to the point where I really didn’t believe I could do both (school and his own music).”
For his audition, Collin sang “Wild World.” By the time the song ended, all three of the male judges were facing in his direction.
Blake and Cee Lo said they were instantly impressed with his performance. But the best comments came from Adam, who called him “one of the purest singers we’ve heard on the show. Ever.”
Guess which team Collin wound up on.
What the show didn’t show: Collin used to perform in a band called Nautical Young and, like some of the other Voice auditions, has gained a solid following on YouTube. But his music extends beyond that. He released a five-song EP in 2007, a four-song EP in November 2011 called “Stark Perspective” (check out the song “Relapse”) and has several covers on iTunes, including one of Maroon 5’s “Payphone” (listen below). And he refers to his music as folktronica, which he explains on Facebook, combines “elements of electronic dance music and acoustic singer-songwriting genres.”
