Holly Henry talks about her battle round ‘win’ on The Voice

Holly Henry was one of only six singers to earn a four-chair turn during the blind auditions on The Voice.

The studio version of her audition song, “The Scientist” by Coldplay, was one of the most popular in terms of iTunes downloads.

But when it came time to air the battle rounds on The Voice, Holly’s was part of montage, meaning we only got to see a couple seconds of it.

So how did it go?

Well, the 19-year-old from Minneapolis advanced, defeating Cilla Chan.

But the day after the show, Holly said she felt somewhat pulled out of her comfort zone by coach Blake Shelton’s song choice — “Torn” by Natalie Imbruglia.

And she confessed that she isn’t sure Blake came to the right conclusion when it ended.

How did she prevail?

“I’m not exactly sure to be completely honest because I’m not a pop singer and I’d never sung that song like in my life,” Holly admitted. “And Cilla is much more of a pop singer than me, so I mean if it were up to me I would probably have given (the win) to Cilla to be honest.

“But I think I just worked really hard on it and tried to like make it so that my style came through because I can’t like change to be a pop vocalist, you know — it’s something I can’t really do. So I think maybe I just sang it in my own style.”

The modesty is typical for Holly. On Facebook, she describes herself as “acoustic/folk/alternative/blonde girl with a weird voice who plays instruments moderately well.”

She says she auditioned for The Voice on a whim, partly because her parents are big fans of the show.

It certainly wasn’t out of her desire to play for a big audience. She also admits to still getting very nervous before a performance, though the nerves tend to scatter once she starts singing.

And if she’s not quite sure how she advanced from the battle rounds, Holly knows what she needs to work on — stage presence.

“I didn’t really ‘work the stage,'” she said, noting she’s not very experienced at performing live. “I kind of just stand in one place and sing, so I should probably work on having more of a stage presence.”
