Update: David Cook’s Team for a Cure wound up as the third most successful fundraising group for Sunday’s Race for Hope in Washington, D.C.

David and company raised $89,157, topping his goal of $85,000, according to the event website.

“Thank you all so much for supporting Race for Hope DC and helping us reach our team goal. Means the world,” David tweeted prior to the race.

Season 7 American Idol winner David Cook is back in the Mid-Atlantic region this week, raising money for a good cause.

After all, it’s time for the Race for Hope in Washington, D.C., an effort to raise money for brain cancer research.

The cause is near and dear to David’s heart because he lost his brother to a brain tumor in 2009.

He’s been involved in the Race for Hope ever since, with his team raising more than $500,000 over the past five years.

In fact, his team has been among the top fundraisers every year since his involvement began.

It looks like 2014 will be no different.

As of 9 a.m. Saturday, 24 hours before the race, David Cook’s Team for a Cure was sitting at number three on the fundraising chart with nearly $88,000 committed.

And that means David’s team has already surpassed its goal of raising $85,000, though there’s still time to donate.
