A week ago, American Idol’s fifth-place finisher, Sonika Vaid, was asked if she’d heard anything about a 2016 summer tour.

The singer said she hadn’t, but added that there are always surprises.

No surprise this time, though. American Idol has confirmed there won’t be a summer tour this year.

The show is preparing for its final week, with a look back at American Idol’s 15-year history set to air Tuesday at 8 p.m., the Season 15 performance finale at 8 p.m. Wednesday and the 8 p.m. finale featuring dozens of past contestants scheduled to air Thursday.

CORE media released a statement saying those three shows are expected to be “so memorable and meaningful and we’ve chosen to end it on that note.”

As Idol’s ratings have declined, so has interest in the tour.

As a result, a tour that once filled arenas has played much smaller venues in recent years.

And Season 14 was the first time Idol took only the Top 5 finishers on tour. Most years, the tour included at least the Top 10.

MacKenzie Bourg, eliminated Thursday night, said the lack of a tour might actually benefit the artists in one way.

“The tour would have been fun, but it also takes away from taking that first step to being an artist,” he said during a Friday afternoon conference call with the media. “I think a lot of the times, people get so caught up in the Idol tour that there’s not a lot of time to put together something meaningful music wise.”
