The disadvantage: She got sick and missed the second day of rehearsals with coach Miley Cyrus and her battle round adviser Joan Jett.
The advantage: She was familiar with the song Miley asked her and Khaliya to perform — “For What It’s Worth” by The Cardigans.
“A lot of people have never heard that song before,” Maye said, looking back on the performance during a conference call with the media Wednesday. “I actually knew the song going into it. Khaliya had never heard it before. But she sounded incredible on it, and we had a lot of fun singing it together.”
The performance was montaged on the show, meaning viewers only got to see a couple seconds of it during Tuesday’s episode.
When it ended, Miley chose Maye to advance to the knockout round. Khaliya, the teenage country singer who lives on the Mescalero Apache reservation in New Mexico, was eliminated from the show.
As for her missed practice time, Maye said Miley made reference to it during her critiques, complimenting her on still coming out prepared and performing so well.
In the small snippet that was aired, we also heard Miley compliment Maye on her “personal style,” especially in her vocals.
An indie-pop artist living in Nashville, Maye said that’s something that’s very important to Miley — the artist as a unique individual.
“One of the things Miley is incredible at is making sure that you are being true to yourself and feeling comfortable in your own skin, and that goes with your wardrobe and everything else that goes into your performance,” said Maye, who was 27 when she auditioned.
“For the battles, I was concerned about the shoes I was wearing. I got to email her about it and she had already talked to wardrobe about it because she didn’t feel like it looked like me. It’s just really amazing that she goes above and beyond to make sure that we are being ourselves as artists through and through.”
