With a full name of Noah McMoyler, he’s a Dublin, Calif., native who released his first major project — a six-track EP called “Light” — earlier this year at age 17.
He made his singing debut 10 years earlier, when he asked if he could sing a tribute to his sister Stevie at her funeral.
His older sister was diagnosed with cancer at age 13. She died at age 19, on April 19, 2007.
“I thought maybe it wasn’t a good idea,” his mother Gina says of Noah’s proposal to sing at Stevie’s funeral. “It’s not like he had been in choir or singing or anything like that. He just wanted to do something for her. And she loved, loved, loved music.”
She especially loved a song called “Judy and the Dream of Horses” by Belle and Sebastian. So that’s the song Noah performed that day.
“It was sad,” he recalls in a touching short film called “Stevie’s Light.” “But it was also magical.”
Today, he calls Stevie his “biggest hero.” For the bravery she showed during her long battle with cancer. For introducing him to alternative music he might never have listened to otherwise. And “she taught me being yourself is the biggest thing you can be.”
For Noah, being yourself means diving into music, even though it resulted in teasing from classmates when he was young, according to his father.
Noah says some of the earliest songs he wrote were about bullying. He began writing music around age 9. By 10, he was learning to play piano. Next came guitar and the drums.
By 15, he had graduated from school talent shows and started performing his own music in coffeehouses, according to his website bio.
And some of that music landed on his debut EP, “Light,” which came out in April. Be sure to check out “Watercolor” and “Light” below.
