In the process, they’ll be trying to add to a remarkably prestigious list of Grammy accomplishments by former American Idol contestants.
Kelly started that history when she won the Grammy awards for best female pop performance (“Since U Been Gone”) and best pop vocal album (“Breakaway”) in 2006.
Since then, there have been only two years — 2012 and 2016 — when a former Idol contestant didn’t walk away with a Grammy.
Kelly is nominated for best pop vocal performance this time around. The nomination is for “Love So Soft,” the lead single from her new album.
She’ll be up against some tough competition. The other nominees are Lady Gaga for “Million Reasons,” Kesha for “Praying,” Pink for “What About Us” and Ed Sheeran for “Shape of You.”
Danny, the third-place finisher from Idol Season 8, is up for his first Grammy. He’s nominated for best contemporary Christina music album for “Rise,” which came out last January.
Danny’s competition: “Echoes” by Matt Maher, “Lifer” by MercyMe, “Hills And Valleys” by Tauren Wells and “Chain Breaker” by Zach Williams.
Some familiar singing show personalities, including Kelly, will also be presenting during Sunday’s show, which begins at 7:30 p.m. on CBS. Other presenters include Alicia Keys and Miley Cyrus.
Miley will also perform with Elton John during the show.
Here’s a complete list of past Idol winners.
