His background: He’s a personal trainer at a YMCA. He was inspired to pursue music by his parents. His mom played the piano; his father sang. Josh sang in church and at 16 was offered a record deal as part of a boy group called 3for3. They were supposed to be a Christian version One Direction, he says. But the band broke up, and Josh says he now finds himself more drawn to secular music.
On joining Team Kelly: “I think Kelly is an awesome person. She has a lot of good energy. She’s an incredible singer. I think she’s helped me a lot. She’s just a really awesome person.”
What the show didn’t show:
* 3for3 was boy group based in Nashville that also included Spencer Lloyd and Benji Shuler and performed together for about a year and a half.
* The group released a pair of singles in 2015 — “Halfway” and “Keep it 100” — both of which cracked the Top 40 on Billboard’s Christian airplay chart. The band also released “The EP” that same year.
* Since the band broke up, Josh told Voice Views he’s been writing music, working with producers and posting covers in an attempt to stay in the game while also juggling work and college.
* Josh credits his experience with 3for3 with molding him as an artist and giving him the confidence to perform in front of large crowds. “It was such a great experience,” he said during a conference call with the media. “I feel like, without that, being on The Voice would be so overwhelming.”
* According to his hometown newspaper, Josh is a graduate of Walker Valley High School and a business student at Cleveland State Community College in his Tennessee hometown.
* As for his selection of “Too Good at Goodbyes” for his audition song, Josh said he really enjoys Sam Smith’s music. “I think we have similar styles,” he said. “And the song’s incredible. I felt like I could really get into it.”
