Abby Cates and Delaney Silvernell both survived the battle round on The Voice.
And they credited the coaching they received during rehearsals for making their performance of Ellie Goulding’s “Love Me Like You Do” so successful.
Kelly Clarkson declared Abby the winner of the battle. But Adam Levine immediately swooped in and stole Delaney, meaning both singers advanced to the knockout round.
Why was the coaching from Kelly and battle round adviser Thomas Rhett a key?
“Both Kelly and Thomas were telling Delaney and I that they thought we sounded good in our rehearsal,” Abby said during a conference call with the media. “But they were like, ‘Bring the fun. Don’t stand there and sing; bring some personality and stage presence.’
“So, they really helped us get out of our shells a little bit and definitely helped us get a little bit more comfortable and get a feel for the stage and for what we were doing,” Abby added.
“And it was really helpful in the end because I feel like we both had a great stage presence and became a lot more comfortable than we would be in that situation.”
Delaney agreed.
“(Kelly) really helped to get us to put some emotion behind the song because I think we were both just so nervous about wanting to be really good in rehearsals and everything. It’s hard not to be, I mean, we’re singing for Kelly Clarkson.
“So, that was definitely on our minds, but she was so intuitive about what we were feeling and just really hit the nail on the head. And her advice on just having fun with the performance and really investing our emotions into it was really priceless.”
As for the steal, Delaney said she was still celebrating Abby’s success when Adam hit his steal button.
“I didn’t really have time to get disappointed, because Adam pressed his button really quickly,” she recalled. “So it was kind of just this whirlwind of emotions, and it never really felt like I was off the show at any point. So, I didn’t really have a ton of time to get upset or be disappointed because I think it is the best possible outcome that can come from battles.”
And Delaney said she benefits from getting to work with a second of the show’s superstar coaches.
“Adam and Kelly have very different coaching styles,” she said. “But I think that having that versatility of coaching is really important just to get different points of view, and they have different things to offer.”
Delaney lives in L.A., was 21 when she auditioned and turned Kelly’s chair with her performance of “In My Blood” by Shawn Mendes.
Abby, 17 when she auditioned, is from Cincinnati, Ohio, and turned Kelly’s chair in the blinds with a performance of “Scars to Your Beautiful” by Alessia Cara.
The knockout round begins Monday on The Voice.
