Franc West had a simple goal in his knockout round match on The Voice.
He wanted to show off his artistry by putting his own spin on “Call Out My Name” by the Weeknd.
It worked to perfection.
Franc advanced to the live playoffs when Jennifer Hudson declared him the winner of his knockout match with Tyshawn Colquitt.
That means we’ll see Franc perform again Monday night in the live playoffs.
He’ll be one of six Team JHUD contestants vying for three spots in the Top 13.
Two singers will advance based on fan voting; a third will be saved by Jennifer.
Here’s what Franc had to saw about his knockout round match.
Voice Views: Can you elaborate a little on why you decided to perform “Call Out My Name” during the knockouts?
Franc: I decided to sing “Call Out My Name” by The Weeknd because The Weeknd is a multi-genre singer and so am I. I thought my unique sound would pair well with this hit. I also was inspired by Prince’s “Call My Name” which I pulled inspiration from for my performance.
Voice Views: The performance was praised by the coaches, and rightfully so. In your mind, what was the key for you to making that song work?
Franc: I think the song choice worked because I’m a songwriter composer and arranger. All of those happen to be my strengths. I love making a song my own. “Call Out My Name” by The Weeknd is already a hit. So I didn’t attempt to make it better. I just took a shot at owning those lyrics for 90 seconds. I’m grateful it worked out.
Voice Views: What would you say are the biggest lessons you’ve taken away from The Voice experience so far?
Franc: Some of the greatest lessons I’ve learned here in this wonderful production of NBC The Voice is that it’s very important to know who you are as a person and an artist. Be teachable and relatable. Be open and confident with your approach, stay humble and let your artistry speak for itself. DONT FORCE IT!! LIVE IT!
Voice Views: I know you can’t divulge song choices, but is there anything you’d like to work on or that you want to be sure to put front and center for viewers to see when the live shows begin?
Franc: I can’t divulge too much but I will say this — I want to continue to grow as each episode airs and allow America to see more of my musicianship. I play piano, drums, guitar etc. I’d like to show a smoother side of my vocal ability and range
Voice Views: Anything else you’d like to add about the knockouts?
Franc: I’d like to mention my Knockout opponent Tyshawn Colquitt. He’s an incredible vocalist. I loved the challenge he presented for me during the knockouts. I took that challenge and put my best foot forward. Now with that step forward, I’m glad to be heading to the LIVE PLAYOFFS!!!
