The Voice kicked off Season 18 in fine fashion Monday night.
Teenager Tate Brusa became the first-ever member of Team Nick Jonas.
Late in the show, The Voice’s newest coach landed his first four-chair turn, Joanna Serenko, another talented teen.
But Nick wasn’t alone in that regard. Nelson Cade and Todd Tilghman turned four chairs as well, opting to join Team John and Team Blake, respectively.
Also earning spots on the show were Tayler Green, Michael Todd Hall, Darious Lyles and Megan Danielle.
Here’s a recap of the show, complete with Voice Views’ picks for the best performances of the night.
Best of the Night:
Nelson Cade III, 27, Anaheim, Calif., “Pride and Joy” by Stevie Ray Vaughan: Nelson’s rasp had John Legend facing in his direction in a heartbeat. The rest of the coaches soon followed so they could watch one of the night’s most fun, professional performances. That ending. Wow. Nick, however, was blocked by John, taking him out of the running. Nick said he could probably win the competition. John complimented Nelson on the “golden, honey-dipped vibe” in his voice. Kelly also loved Nelson’s personality. Nelson joined Team John.
Runners-up:
Joanna Serenko, 18, St. Louis, Missouri, “All My Loving”: She was just two lines into the song when her soulful vocal style prompted chair turns from Kelly, John and Nick. Blake eventually turned as well. Blake called it an “effortless, powerful vocal.” John says she gave him chills and sounded assured for such a young age. Nick said she blew him away. Kelly likes the vibe of her voice. Nick made a second pitch for Joanna, refusing to give up on her. Joanna chose Team Nick.
Tayler Green, 27, New Jersey, “Issues” by Julia Michaels: Her plaintive vocals prompted an early chair turn from Kelly Clarkson. Nick followed midway through the performance. I really like Tayler’s look, tone and that tender ending was a nice touch. John loved the fact that her hair and name are coordinated. Nick says that when he heard Tayler hit the high notes, he knew she has the ability to win the show. Kelly calls her super, super talented. Tayler opts to join Team Kelly.
Todd Michael Hall, 50, Saginaw, Mich., “Juke Box Hero” by Foreigner: His rock vibe prompted a quick chair turn from John Legend. Blake Shelton joined him near the end of the song. The judges praise his range. Blake called Todd’s performance a direct path to the finale and took him back to the hair band days. John called the performance “magical.” Todd joins Team Blake.
Also made the show:
Todd Tilghman, 41, Meridian, Mississippi, “We Got Tonight” by Bob Seger: His gruff vocals prompt three quick chairs turns before he ever hits the chorus. Before he’s midway through the performance he has a four-chair turn. John complimented the joy and spirit in his performance. Kelly loved his rasp. Blake praised his voice, his passion and his “holy (church) hop.” Todd opted to join Team Blake.
Darious Lyles, 30, Chicago, Ill., “How Do You Sleep” by Sam Smith: His tender opening prompted quick chair turns from Kelly and John. He shows off nice power and range through the performance. Darious joins Team John. John said he loved Darius’ low range and the runs he did. Kelly liked the story-teller quality of his vocals and called Darius “a very talented singer. Darious went with Team John.
Tate Brusa, 16, Salt Lake City, Utah, “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran: He hit a big note near the end of the song that prompted chair turns from Nick Jonas and Blake Shelton. Blake called his performance incredible. Nick said he heard “fight” in his voice. And then he took the stage to give Tate some on-the-spot coaching. Tate picked Team Nick.
Megan Danielle, 17, Douglasville, Ga.., “Remedy” by Adele: She showed off a nice little growl in her voice during the opening. She also performed with lots of emotion. Kelly turned midway through the performance. She says she heard a bit of Adele and a bit of country in Megan’s voice. She also said Megan deserved a four-chair turn.
