A great new album from Miranda, with a big assist from Nicolle Galyon

So, I’m not a huge fan of country music, but I’ve had Miranda Lambert’s new album pretty much on repeat since it came out Tuesday.

I love the musical diversity Miranda shows on “Platinum.” I love the fact that the album includes so many flat-out fun songs.

But it wasn’t until I checked out the song-writing credits this weekend that I realized there’s a strong tie between this album and The Voice, one stronger than the fact that Miranda is married to Blake Shelton.

The name of Season 2 contestant Nicolle Galyon keeps popping up on those credits.

Five times, in fact.

She co-wrote two of my favorites from the album, the title track and “Priscilla.” They’re among those flat-out fun songs I mentioned earlier. If you haven’t checked them out, please do. I’ve embedded a snippet of Nicolle singing “Platinum” below.

Nicolle also co-wrote “Automatic.” The lead single from the album. The song that took Video of the Year honors at the CMT Music Awards last week. And the song that’s roaring its way to the top of Billboard’s country charts.

Nicolle was 27 when she auditioned for The Voice, a songwriter looking for a chance to sing her own songs.

She landed on Team Adam and made it to the battle round before being eliminated.

Post-show, she released a four-track “Child of the Country Sun” EP in October 2012. Tony Lucca helps out on the title track; Season 2 colleague Mathai sings with her on “Jesus Town.”

And country fans might be familiar with another track, “Dirt Road Prayer” — a Nicolle song that Season 10 American Idol runner-up Lauren Alaina recorded for her debut album.

But it’s as a songwriter that Nicolle has been on a roll as late. She also placed a co-write on Lady Antebellum’s latest album.

she co-wrote “We Were Us,” Keith Urban’s duet with Miranda Lambert. The second single from Keith’s “Fuse” album, “We Were Us” hit number one on both of Billboard’s primary country singles charts.

Nicolle’s Twitter profile reads like this: “I try to write songs that people in my hometown would wanna hear. And sometimes i get lucky and people like Lady A & Keith & Miranda record em.”

Indeed. It takes great songs to make a great album. And Nicolle Galyon just provided a big assist on “Platinum.”
