Platinum Hit

A new night for Platinum Hit and its 7 songwriters

So, I flicked on the TV Monday night to learn the fate of Sonyae Elise, Jackie Tohn and Scotty Granger.

Instead, I wound up watching the first two minutes of one of those horrible “Real Housewives of (fill in the blank)” shows.

Seems Platinum Hit has a new night and a new time slot — Fridays at 8 p.m.

Now I’m not a whiz at TV programming, but I’ve heard Friday night is not where you put your hottest shows.

Fact is, Platinum Hit has been anything but a TV hit, according to most reports I’ve read.

Over at rickey.org, Rickey Yaneza reported that the show didn’t even rank among the top 100 cable shows for the last Monday in May, failing to draw 1 million viewers.

Shame. I find the show pretty entertaining. At least the judges — Kara DioGuardi, Jewel and a pair of guests each week — aren’t afraid to express opinions.

And the songs the contestants produce are impressive given the time constraints they face and the group dynamics that sometimes help and more often seem to get in the way. Or at least provide a healthy share of the show’s drama.

For those who have missed out, here’s what you need to know to catch up.

The show takes 12 aspiring/struggling songwriters, splits them up into teams, then asks them to write a song, basically in a day. The final songs are performed in front of the judges, with one member of the losing team getting the boot each week.

At stake for the winner: $100,000, a songwriting contract and a recording contract.

Jackie Tohn works on a song about love on Platinum Hit. (Bravo Photo)We’ve lost five contestants already. That leaves …

  • Sonyae, the diva of the group;
  • Nick Nittoli, the egotist of the group;
  • Scotty, a creative director for Jordin Sparks;
  • Jackie, a former Idol semifinalist;
  • Johnny Marnell, a computer programmer trying to get out from behind a desk;
  • Jes Hudak, who wrote a love song about Johnny in the last episode;  and
  • Brian Judah, who has managed to survive five shows without carving out a definable niche to this point.

Of  late, Sonyae, Scotty and Johnny seem to be on a song-writing roll. Sonyae did so well writing a song about “love” that she can’t be eliminated in the next episode.

Jackie? She’s been on the verge of elimination at least twice.

The fun resumes Friday at 8 p.m. when the contestants take to the streets to perform.

    At least this show is testing musicians ability to write music…unlike shows like Idol.

      Poor ratings is the best guess.
