Season 3, The Voice

A top 12 and a more Idol-like finals on The Voice

A top 12. A party afterward.

Sound familiar?

In a pleasant surprise, it appears The Voice will switch to more of an American Idol style elimination process after this week.

Beginning next Monday, the show’s remaining singers will square off each week, according to a news release from NBC.

Each week, viewers will vote, and the bottom two finishers in that voting will go home, regardless of what team they are on.

That’s a departure from past seasons when we saw mass eliminations — at least four at a time — right up until the finals.

Under the old process, the season whizzed by, with the finals arriving before we really got to know the singers very well.

This format seems to address that situation, allowing all of the remaining singers to perform every week — for perhaps as many as six weeks.

We’ll have more of a chance to develop favorites. They’ll get more exposure. And more exposure leads to a better chance of launching a star from a show that seems to be uncovering the best talent among the televised singing competitions.

The other part of today’s announcement is that the coaches and the top 12 will perform at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood after tomorrow night’s elimination show.

Clear Channel’s iHeartRadio will carry the concert, so you can listen in via the Hits Live channel on iHeartRadio and on the iHeartRadio app available on mobile devices and tablets.
