Even before he paraded across the AMA stage during a performance some are calling too racy for TV, Adam Lambert explained what he was about to do in an interview with The Associated Press.
Said Adam: “We’ve seen female pop and rock performers do that for the last 10 years. They’ve been very provocative, owning their power and sexuality. You just don’t see men doing it very often. And I’m hoping to break down that double standard with this number.”
Of course, he’s also saying the kiss — plus that little move that got edited out for the West Coast version of the AMAs — were spur-of-the-moment additions.
Adam apparently enjoyed himself. He sent out these Tweets shortly after the show.
“Hope U had fun tonight. We did.”
And, then, two minutes later: “All hail freedom of expression and artistic integrity.”
If nothing else, Adam has everyone talking, the day before his debut album hits stores no less. (Go here for the Idol Chatter review.)
I’d be shocked if any of Adam’s most avid fans were all that shocked by last night’s performance.
But I’d also be surprised if he won over too many new fans with a performance that was more about on-stage antics than music.
And that’s a shame. Because with that voice, given that platform, Adam could have used the AMA stage to win over new legions of fans with his talent rather than just shock people.
One NPR writer suggests that Adam is lucky folks are talking about something other than his singing today.
And it should be noted that Adam’s album is now available for download via iTunes. It’s currently only sixth among best sellers, behind Lady Gaga (who’s on the list at number one and number three with different versions of “The Fame Monster”), Rihanna, John Mayer and even Susan Boyle.
Here’s a link to theinterview Adam did with The Associated Press prior to the AMAs.
And here’s a link to a site where you can watch all the Idol performances at the AMAs, Adam’s included.
