Anders Drerup told The Voice his music career has taken him to five of the seven continents.

His quest to become a solo artist took him to The Voice stage.

And it was successful. The 36-year-old Austin-based singer-songwriter turned Nick Jonas’ chair with a reggae-flavored version of “(I Can’t Help) Falling in Love with You.”

That was enough to earn him a spot on Season 18 of The Voice.

Here’s what Anders told Voice views about his blind audition experience.

Voice Views: How did you wind up auditioning for The Voice Season 18 and what prompted you to do it?

Anders: My girlfriend at the time was a big fan and she kept on telling me I had nothing to lose. I couldn’t find an honest way to contest that, so I sent in a video of me playing and it all just went from there. I am so so happy I took her advice though. lol

Voice Views: Why did you choose the reggae-flavored version of “Can’t Help Falling in Love” for your audition? What’s your performance history with that song (for instance, is it one you’ve played often)?

Anders: Yes, I’ve played it in its original ballad arrangement so very many times. It’s undeniably one of the great love songs humans have ever created. I chose to do it reggae style mainly because it let me stretch out with the incredible Voice Band. I don’t think I could ever stand in front of that group of musicians and do something stock or expected, they’re just so freaking great!

Voice Views: Did you have a coaching preference heading into the blind audition? How do you feel about landing on Team Nick?

Anders: Not really, I guess. I mean, I have always loved what John Legend does, but I was simply hoping to make an impression. I guess it worked. Nick is amazing and I’m lucky to be part of #teamnick!!

Voice Views: What was that blind audition experience like? You got a very quick chair turn from Nick.

Anders: It was nerve racking. We prepare for quite a while for the blinds, huge lead up for a quick appearance … I’m not particularly used to that, so it was odd. I was standing in front of the door as they announced me and I just remember putting my finger to my neck to check my pulse. I was like… “Yeah, okay, I’m nervous.” Never felt more alive though.
