Fan voting begins this week on The Voice, which means contestants’ popularity comes into play for the first time.

How is this going to work, you might ask.

Each contestant from each team will perform on Monday or Wednesday night. Fans will vote for their favorite.

The top two finishers in fan voting for each team will advance. Then each coach will get to select one of their remaining three artists to advance.

And, by week’s end, the top 20 on The Voice will become a top 12.

Now, back to that little matter of popularity. I’ve posted each contestant’s number of Facebook likes and Twitter followers below. The numbers are as of Sunday afternoon, so they might have changed a bit

But I’m pretty sure this hasn’t changed — far and away the most popular contestant on those social media sites is Cassadee Pope of Team Blake, who garnered much of that backing as the pre-Voice lead singer for Hey Monday.

I wasn’t surprised to see Melanie Martinez and Dez Duron atop their respective teams. I was surprised by the gap between the number of followers Dez has compared to everyone else on Team Christina.

That’s partly testament to the fact that — blind auditions or not — a cute guy is going to get a heck of a lot of backing on a show like this.

The biggest surprise is probably MacKenzie Bourg, who leads Team Cee Lo in Facebook likes and Twitter followers, leading even heavily hyped Trevin Hunte.
